Learn the mysterious ways of the Unix in the cavernous HQ of Darq#.
Over six weeks you'll learn what a Unix is, why you would want one
and how it likes to be tickled.
We'll explore TCP/IP (Internet style) networks using FreeBSD and
OpenSolaris, two free operating systems with great legacies. You'll
start off learning the different parts that make up the system, but
in a surprisingly short amount of time you'll be able to diagnose
network problems, keep things running smoothly and use your skills
to attract sex partners from all around the world.
Using the ancient art of "words" we'll show you how to disregard the
graphical interface, and do what you need from the command line.
You will need:
* A laptop that works with some free hard disk space
* A notebook and pen (which you'll use as a logbook/diary)
* Curiosity
* To promise to attend for 6 weeks
You will learn:
* Semantics of the command line
* How to smoke a (unix) pipe
* That everything is a file
* How to slice, dice and throw away mice

way.

It's rude.
Old news - Field Trip: Bletchley Park on Saturday 21st of February 2009 totally ruled!
* Who: Funix faculty and friends
* Where: Meet at Euston station outside WHSmiths (map at http://is.gd/jGQj )
* When: Saturday, 10:00am at Euston Station
* How much: ~ £30 (Return train journey £18.80, Bletchley Park
membership is £10 for 1 year which grants you unlimited visits)
* Why: Beautiful old machines (e.g. a PDP 11 with vector display),
enthusiastic volunteer guides (many of whom worked there in WWII),
meet the guy that rebuilt colossus in his garage and exclaim "no
effin way" when you see the 30mph lightbulb powered optical punch tape reader.
The National museum of computing ( http://www.tnmoc.org/ )is located at
Bletchley park, and it's a strange place filled with heavy electronics
from another era. If you were disappointed by the Science Museum's
computer section, this should be much more to your liking.
